I'll be doing that soon for a while.
A3 south of Guildford heading north is a disaster. The same stretch heading south is even worse. Don't cut through Guildford in either direction in the mornings or evening because the whole town jams up.

The M3 is better, slightly, but still deeply unpleasant. Avoid the Hog's Back, speed camera vans more often than not, joins the A3 at the worst possible time and downright dangerous in winter.

I know them both well driving from home to in laws over the last 10 years...
there is no perfect answer, I'm looking for a more central job so i can get thye train to Waterloo, so any driving would be temporary.
