I've got a new TV with all that 'SMART' stuff. All I need that is something to record on to. Can I use a standard external HDD to do that?

Not sure
Most are set up for memory sticks, so depends if the HDD is formatted right for it, and whether it can cope with a drive that big.
Would almost certainly need to be a powered HDD, doubt the socket would supply the juice for a USB powered one.

Yeah. Check the manual to see if there are any write speed requirements.

Yes. We know.

You've got extra connections though, which would be useful.

Apparently you just plug in a USB HD and its works, but i've not used one before.
