Both.I think it may even be a synecdoche (a term /concept I learned in English Lit many years ago, swore I'd never need and am quite possibly misusing now) it's a (shit) style of facial hair which has become synonymous with a certain kind of nerd.

my idea of a nerd is a skinny, pencil-necked dweeb, like sheldon from BBTwho could never grow a beard. i can see i need to rethink my lexicon.
