me and my mate camped out in the garden when we were 8
because we were told it might be visible that night. Unfortunately we had no idea what we were looking for (we'd just been told it was pretty lights in the sky and being before the internet, we had no pictures of it).

I didn't see it because of clouds in Iceland. On the same trip I spent a day at sea not seeing whales. Brilliant.
