But recruiters don't understand my industry and have latched onto Microsoft accreditations as a way of saying "yep, he's definitely qualified to show a fuckwit like me how to turn on my monitor".

I'm just annoyed and sounding off, really.
Imagine a specific bunch of textbooks that you don't need to understand how to wire a plug. Imagine wiring a plug is quite a specialised task to the extent that the people that recruit you have no idea how it works; it may as well be magic. Imagine that text book forces you to learn six months worth of pointless bullshit when you know perfectly well that it's three wires and a flathead.
