problem is no-one remembers much over 50 years back, and historical records aren't all that great, so comparison isn't as easy as some like to think.
Plus: lot of money being made by some (e.g. Al Gore, carbon credit trading).

We can get pretty accurate measurements of what the weather was like through core samples, there is clear evidence that the planet is warming up and fairly quickly too which will mean there are greater temp differences and creating bigger storms etc.
The only (possible) argument is what is causing it as the earth goes through hot cold cycles
