Or do you listen to composers such as Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Bernstein, Copland, etc.?

Even studied Weill, Stravinsky and Schoenberg at uni (minor music unit in non-music degree).
Like Stravinsky a lot, Schoenberg not at all, though could sort of see what he was trying to achieve.
Bernstein is a favourite, Wagner too, plus a load more.

The one I hate is the one that sounds like several groups individual practice sessions played back simultaneously.

Ornette Coleman's album Free Jazz has two quartets playing separate improvisations - one coming out of the left speaker, the other coming out of the right.
I rather like it, but I suspect you'd hate it.

Sometimes music takes tine to grow on you, have listened to some very recent compositions that at first were "wtf" but after a while really liked.
