The crime scene where a person was killed
Just because he said he fired the gun it doesn't stop it being the scene of a crime.

What is it's relevence?
She's dead. He fired the gun. Where the cartridges landed is immaterial.

I am clearly not a forensics expert
but I would think that any evidence that the scene wasn't correctly dealt with would give the defence an opportunity to question the prosecutions line of attack.

"I fired the gun"
"you fired the gun?"
"yes"

You haven't got to be Perry Mason. They have to prove he knew it was her. That's the tricky bit.
