over 40% don't believe in evolution (with a lot of those thinking the world is only about 5,000 yrs old and the bible is the exact word of god).

Ah, the Bush years: no child left behind, evil doers, racism, government funded and supported misogyny, fundamentalist religion (the American Taliban) ruling our lives, cutting taxes for the rich (because they are rich and therefore better than the rest of us), raising taxes for the poor, Rush Limbaugh, it goes on and on.

I hear you, loud and clear. Up until last summer my younger brother was stuck in the bible belt. Damn scary. Hopefully there will be a slight shift over the next few years. Anything will help. It's always been a completely anti-intellectual place, and this is only compounded by the size of the country and its collective insistence that we occupy the center of the globe. *sads*
