it's mostly to let them know they won't be seeing much of me anytime soon, as I'm fleeing the country. Trust me, they ain't worth much.

is NYC - London.
ETA: New York was not too American a few years back. But all is changed. *Homogeneous* *Evil*
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 11:27, Reply)

So are you coming to a specifically non-homogenous part of London?
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 11:33, Reply)

indeed. I've no pretense that things are so much better in the UK. I spent a big chunk of my childhood living as one of the few white girls in Harlem. Whatever, there were lots of ups and downs with that. Has lived in every borough of NYC, but always felt like we were outside of 'mainland' Amerika. Geographically, this is true, except for the Bronx. But the badness comes a-creeping. And was always a gypsy. So will give London a shot. Has always been on my short-list. (And it's a *really* short list.)

and a great jumping off point for the rest of Europe. When are you arriving?
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 11:55, Reply)

early July. And is no stranger to Europe, by any means. A central location is a must.
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 11:59, Reply)

So where else in Europe have you been (e.g., were you one of the mass exodus of the intelligentsia who left in the intellectual dry-spell known as the Bush years?)
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 12:02, Reply)

but I have been to a few places. Ireland entire, Scottish Highlands, UK, France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece. That's as far as European-ish destinations. Have also traveled through a small portion of the Middle East, as well as South-East Asia and India. (not that this is a big deal; all one needs to do is save up funds and go. Although I recently learned that only 7% of Americans have a passport. LOL.)
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 12:29, Reply)

Indeed, I'd heard that statistic which is quite worrying; 'merkins don't need a passport for travel to and from Canada though (or am I imagining it?).
I've done the countries that you mention (and am from the Scottish highlands originally) but would strongly recommend Russia. Apart from the obvious vastness of the place it is excellent.
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 12:33, Reply)

what they call a passport card or enhanced drivers license (only good for Canada and Mexico).
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 12:47, Reply)

that's the most frightening thing. Edmund, wonder if I ever passed through your town. Was on a motorbike on that trip. And I have been dying to go to Russia forever, particularly St. Petersburg.
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 12:55, Reply)

over 40% don't believe in evolution (with a lot of those thinking the world is only about 5,000 yrs old and the bible is the exact word of god).
Ah, the Bush years: no child left behind, evil doers, racism, government funded and supported misogyny, fundamentalist religion (the American Taliban) ruling our lives, cutting taxes for the rich (because they are rich and therefore better than the rest of us), raising taxes for the poor, Rush Limbaugh, it goes on and on.
Good luck in the UK. I am jealous of your move.
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 12:46, Reply)

I hear you, loud and clear. Up until last summer my younger brother was stuck in the bible belt. Damn scary. Hopefully there will be a slight shift over the next few years. Anything will help. It's always been a completely anti-intellectual place, and this is only compounded by the size of the country and its collective insistence that we occupy the center of the globe. *sads*
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 15:45, Reply)

Dav, I'm surprised you've not got some sort of posh dressing gown. Knowing you as such a sartorial genius.
( , Tue 26 May 2009, 11:07, Reply)

I smell of northern grit and determination, with a slight hint of disappointment and eternal optimism.

I walked home barefoot from my pet's house last night at 1.30am. It had been raining, it was absolutely beautiful. Only thing spoiling it was not having a cig, but didn't want to smokify my dress.
I love splashing in puddles in barefeet. I'm probably going to have something nasty now. I really don't care.
