Sounds like a secretary who's out of control, or some kind of total fucking pedant who's obsessed with process over content. If these people employ a total fucktard like that, do you really want to work for them? (unless of course it's ridiculously well paying).
And besides, to their snarkiest charge that what you put in the letter isn't in the CV, etc. Why the fuck would you put the same stuff in the letter as in the CV? It would defeat the point of sending both. I quite agree with the poster who mentioned it sounds like they need to be taking applications via some web form, rather than standard CVs.

The guy who wrote it is a highly qualified veterinarian
and I'm guessing it's his own practice. I summarised my cv in the cover letter and then expanded upon it in bullet format in the cv. That's what cover letters are for no?

a cover letter is to explain why you want and deserve the job
and to expand upon relevant parts of your CV so as not to make the CV 4 million pages long.
