I'm not sure what type of engineer you are but there is still some workfor environmental engineers as remediation of contaminated sites continues even if a bit slower than it used to be.

Mechanical.And there ain't shit out there for me. I've sent out scores of resumes and not heard anything back from anyone- they don't even give the courtesy of a "No thanks" message.
