I'm filling up already.

My fondest memory is from the first bit of childhood I can remember with any real clarity. Back then the 11+ was a real big deal, and I passed. Not just passed but in the top 5% nationally. My parents were well chuffed and on my 11th birthday I was rewarded. Gently ripping the paper open with all the skill and care of a wounded buffalo, I uncovered the best present ever. A model yacht. Not just any model, it was a scale replica of The Lively Lady (Sir Alec Rose’ round the world contender). It had proper rigging and everything and could be set to tack against the wind.

At that time my sisters were very young and my dad worked all the hours he could so I didn’t see much of him. That day we went to the park, just me and him, and sailed my yacht. It was really great and when it was becalmed in the middle my dad rolled up his trousers and went and got it. We had an ice-cream and then a tired porkylips went home, with his tired dad.

This memory has only just came back to me and I’m pleased it did. I’ve never had a really close relationship with my dad. We can go weeks without contact. On Saturday morning I had a call from his girlfriend to tell me had been in hospital and had a cancerous kidney removed. He’s doing well and doesn’t want any fuss. I think I’ll be making sure we get some quality time soon.

I'm glad to hear that Porky but.......
Hang on. How old is your dad? He must be at least 70 and he has a girlfriend.
