basically.
There is a fertile window of about a week each month, and it's the week before ovulation. This window ends at ovulation. Once you've ovulated you enter the luteal phase and it's then too late for fertilization to occur as the sperm has to travel to reach the egg.
Implantation takes place normally about 6-10 days post-ovulation. HCG levels then start rising and that's what a pregancy test picks up. Usually at the time when your period is due. Sensitive pregnancy tests can pick up HCG a few days earlier than the date your period is due.
