I had a discussion with a chap in PCWorld along those lines
he insisted I buy Norton or something similar because AVG isn't reliable and has a known bug with vista.
I told him I'd check out the bug on some forums but I wasn't buying Norton, he asked where I'd look...I said, "Oh, Snopes.com!"
He looked blank.
Clearly he was an internet LEGEND!

Hah, there was someone on here who's parents were convinced to spend something like £1500 on a mac laptop so they can send emails.
