Probably because the ceramics used in hair straighteners were developed for the space program.

Like velcro
and teflon, and pens that can write upside down.

Technically
such things were invented as a result of research carried out for the space program. They weren't invented for it.

Except for the pens. But an ordinary ballpoint would have worked fine. It's only when you have a gravitational field that you have a problem with pens not working 'upside down'.

I was being facetious
.

Sometimes
unless a post has the Facetious tag on it, that sort of thing goes right over my head. Especially on a Monday, and when I'm nipping in and out of the lab and trying to do sciency work type stuff too!

I was actually being a bit silly.
I know for a fact that all the astronauts had the benefit of poker straight hair for their flight pictures.
