My favourite lie this year is:
"Everyone knows MI5 was renamed, but at the same time some government office dealing with co-ordinating local council rubbish collections had its name changed to MI5. This means that the thousands of FoI requests wrongly addressed to MI5 end up here, so while they're being absolutely truthful when they say they don't have a file on you (or whatever), it's a handy way for the security services to avoid answering your questions."
