I'd love to hear more about your US adventure.

I'm thinking somewhere between 6 and 12 months away from blighty would be just the ticket.

That should give me ample chance to be completely irresponsible and then to hopefully come home and do something more productive with my life.

Are the Americans as thick as you would imagine?

The States would be a good choice.
Quite a good range of different types of landscape and lifestyles to experience.
