That said when i lived in Hull all of the schools retained a 0% 5-GCSE pass rate
That means that in none of the high schools did a pupil graduate with at least five subjects

At the end of manditory education in England
you take a test in each subject, if you pass you are awarded a General Certificate of Secondary Education. The pass is graded (A,B,C..etc) like a normal test.

You arent required to attend school after age 16
you just leave. You use the marks you get for your GCSE exams to apply for further study or jobs

The GCSE's are graded
from A-G, with U being the equivalent of a fail.
A-C is considered the grades to aim for, but if you get anything other than a U you're still considered passed.
We don't have official graduation in the UK, and if you do fail your GCSE's you have the option of going to 6th form (like a junior college) to re-take them, or find a job.
