Used to keep snails,yes, snails, when my kids were young. Snails make great pets and can do entertaining tricks.
In fact, my experimental snails made the front page of QOTW a while ago.

Snails make me cry...Because my dad used to stand on them in the mornings when he went outside. So I used to get up early and hide any I could find. I think they'd be good pets, they certainly seem friendly enough! :)
