They are.
One Nan was a very badly-behaved, outspoken alcoholic with a keen sense of fun.
This Nan was a kind, nature-walks, camping, let's-jump-in-puddles type.
I got lucky with my Nans.

Once you get to Nan status you get to be who you are but without worrying what you should be doing or what people will think, I reckon.

My lovely nan dies twenty years ago and I still miss her.
My horrible nan is still alive and still tries to cause trouble.

My lovely nan died when I was 13 and the one who is still alive used to be lovely.
She is now a cantankerous old cow who criticises everyone and has the aforementioned 20 cats who piss, moult and shit on everything... lovely.
