It's pretty ridiculous how much they can hold.
At full capacity it's something like 30 million cubic meters of water. I can't remember the exact figure though, I learnt it at school.

that would be an insanely large amount of water

I've revised my opinion
that would be deep for a flood storage reservoir, but the area is likely to be much bigger
