I live in a valley.
It's been raining..... A LOT.

I got to work ok but just found out I may not be able to get home.

The good news is I'm a good swimmer.

I walked five miles last night
mostly in the dark. The ground is incredibly wet - almost as saturated as it was last time it flooded around here. I love my everything-proof boots!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:24, Reply)
I don't like hiking in the rain.
Wind and cold I can cope with, but not the rain.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:28, Reply)
It wasn't raining.
I do have a good waterproof jacket, £4 from Scope, other charity shops are available. It kept me perfectly dry in one of the worst showers I've even been caught in and walking through the rain was great fun. Puddle jumping FTW!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:31, Reply)
You're a puddle jumper too?
Two years ago I jumped in a huge puddle forgetting my mum was next to me and she got soaked.

She wasn't happy.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:34, Reply)
"Puddle jumper", a great euphemism for a man who is "good with colours"
or "fond of quiche"

'uphill gardener'
Not you personally, of course.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:37, Reply)
There's a place near me called "Uphill", it has a large garden centre
yup, I live near the Uphill Garden Centre, for all your uphill gardening needs.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:43, Reply)
Seriously? That's hilarious
Handy for those who are 'light on their feet', 'confirmed bachelors' etc
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:51, Reply)
what are your boots
I don't have any waterproof ones, and I could do with them
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:34, Reply)
Meindl Borneo Pro MFS
My dad's had a pair for four years, put a couple of thousand miles on them and they're still good as new. They took about fourty miles wearing-in and I'm not sure I'll ever buy anything other than these again. Great boots.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:40, Reply)
hmmm
little outside my price range considering they won't get all that much use.

What I really need are some very comfortable wellies given the amount of walking in and near rivers I have to do
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:41, Reply)
I refuse to believe there are such things as comfortable wellies.
Then again, mine are steel-toecap, which freeze your toes.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:43, Reply)
trouble is
I need steel-toecaps as well for site business.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:46, Reply)
Yeah, mine are from my archaeology days.
I used to go on site with 2 pairs of thermal socks and newspaper stuffed down the boot. Still froze. I have shit circulation. I was sitting by the stove last night and my fingernails turned navy.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:48, Reply)
Yeah, I live in search of the perfect pair -
boots I can wear with jeans, skirts, dresses and can also wear for tramping around the muddy riverbanks of South Glos.

I'm getting these: www.justinbootstore.com/order/justin/jbl3000.htm

Edit: these look awesome but they're too pricey and they ain't black: www.ariat.com/products_detail.aspx?pcid=12&cid=28&scid=99&pid=572
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:42, Reply)
They'd look great on Vipros.

They're cool
but they'd be a bitch to clean.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:01, Reply)
indeed
so I don't wear them in the mud
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:04, Reply)
Hmm
Bits of ther north east are on flood alert. The river through Morpeth was looking very high as I drove in this morning.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:33, Reply)
We have flood defences in Todmorden now.
I'm not too worried.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:37, Reply)
Oh man I wish I lived in a place that had well designed flood defences.

(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 9:55, Reply)

ah, proper stuff
much better than flood walls and the like
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:04, Reply)
It's pretty ridiculous how much they can hold.
At full capacity it's something like 30 million cubic meters of water. I can't remember the exact figure though, I learnt it at school.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:34, Reply)
that seems unlikely
that would be an insanely large amount of water

I can probably check though and give you unnecessary facts on it from a database I have access to
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:39, Reply)
nah, it's ok.

(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:48, Reply)
If it was 1km square and 30m deep
Which sounds like a lot.
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:51, Reply)
I've revised my opinion
that would be deep for a flood storage reservoir, but the area is likely to be much bigger
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:57, Reply)
or 30m square and 1km deep.

(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 11:41, Reply)
I think we have one of those.

(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:05, Reply)
Just found out it's only flooded further on past my house.
Hurrah!
(, Wed 18 Nov 2009, 10:04, Reply)

I've been carrying a brolly around london all week without so much as a drop of rain. In fact Mon and Tues were glorious days.

Anyone else think it's odd that something solid can be transparant?

No, I've managed to get my mind round transparency.
