he goes incognito into an opium den, maybe that's where you got that idea. He injects cocaine in the books - bizarrely, to relax him.

In fact, in the story where he goes into the opium den, he remarks to Watson (who is suprised to see him there) something along the lines of 'I'll bet you are thinking I have added opium smoking to my list of vices you so very much dispprove of'...

I'm pretty sure he's smoking something in the books that I have read
namely, the complete sherlock holmes.

I distinctly remember watson complaining about him smoking his pipe with drugs in it

edit: wikipedia would have me believe otherwise, and backs up monty's story.
