on something that has nothing to do with how you do your job, from someone who doesn't know jack shit about you or how you think. It's like trying to do a jigsaw when you have half the pieces and don't know what the picture is supposed to be.

Sounds like they're making toomany assumptions about you and they're getting it wrong. Happens to me too (but not as often as it used to). Maybe you should deliberately set their train of thought about you crashing into a wall by making them expect you to behave in a certain way, and then suddenly doing something opposite to what they expect.
