Much as I hate to turn this place into Which? magazine,what deal did you go for?
I'm trying to decide between the Tesco 12 month PAYG or the O2 600 mins/500 texts deal (for either 3GS 16 or 32GB).

3GS 16gb £35/month £89 up front charge with Vodafone 24 months600 mins, unlimited texts and 1gb of internet - O2 and orange have "unlimited" internet but their fair usage is 750mb which is fucking cheeky!

I'm going to opt for O2 PAYG and the cheapo SIM I've already got.Works out slightly cheaper and I'm not tied into a contract for longer than a month.
