Goodness me
So let me see if I understand this - you're pulled for a traffic offence and you get to court the very same day?

Here in the cradle of democracy, where the legal system knows no parallel, you'd be waiting weeks - possibly months - for a court date. Set at their - not your - convenience.

I'm guessing that an inspection certificate is some sort of annual roadworthiness test? We'd call it an M.O.T..

Nah, he probably got the ticket a couple weeks ago.
His "this afternoon." probably meant that's when he wanted to tell the judge to suck his big fat cock.

Edit: In California, your court date is usually two weeks to a month after the initial infraction. Unless you're arrested, then you appear in court within 72 hours.

I'm not liking
This business about paying costs even if you're in the right though.

Here, you produce your documents and if they're in order you're on your way again.

I have had a couple
of fix it tickets for things like a brake light. You get it fixed, go down the cop shop, pay $10 for administrative costs and police inspection and you don't even have to go to your court date - the police just file that the issue has been fixed.

I wish.
Here they make whoever was driving pay the court costs- which in this case was $61.

Fucksocks.

That's ridiculous!
A few years ago when I was illegal, I was driving on my English learners permit (they were made of paper and it doesn't say anything about it being a learners permit - now they have similar drivers licenses to us), got cited for driving without a license.
Took the permit into court, wasn't asked for proof of immigration status (it's only the Mexicans they ask), showed my learners permit and the judge dismissed the case. He showed the permit to the baliff who said "looks legitimate to me".

Didn't have to pay a penny.

(Now of course, I am legal).

Also, won't the owner of the car
reimburse you for the court costs?

Yeah, the offer was made.
And I will take him up on it as he's employed and I'm not.

Gotta say, though, it was entertaining to see the strange cross-section of humanity that filtered through there. We had an almost incomprehensible Asian woman, an almost incomprehensible black girl (the judge had to ask her to repeat herself because her bumble-lip ghetto speak was so bad), a woman who had to go to her car three times to look for her proof of insurance and kept bringing in the wrong things, and a parade of knuckle-dragging mouth breathers. How the judge kept a straight face is beyond me. He seemed genuinely relieved when someone spoke in clear English.

Goodness me again
If we had a system like that here West Yorkshire Police could have pulled every Toyota/Honda/Audi in Bradford and got the country out of recession a lot sooner...
