A couple of toothpicks would have that covered, literally. ;-)

cunt
I had forgotten all about it truth be told. I only vaguely remember talking about it.

what was the gist?

did you recommend anything?

Well
the gist was that there will be masses of stuff to photograph, and the best tip for a decent photo is keeping the camera steady. If the shot is brilliant, the lighting perfect etc, then it is a shame to fuck it up and make it blurry. Even resting the camera against a wall, or tree branch is enough, but not always convenient. So that is where the cheeky tripod comes in handy. When using my SLR, i have one of those remote plunger things that 'the experts' use. It totally eliminates any shake With digital i would recommend putting on the a 2 second timer and standing back. the added bonus with that is that you can run into frame and brandish your bits.

I don't have a fancy camera by any means
merely a Canon Ixus 85, but the tripod thing does sound worthwhile.

I will likely only get a mini one however, as I don't want to be lugging something around.

how would you assess the wisdom of that move?

A mini one is good, better than nothing,
Not as much range obviously, but a definite boon

I'll give it some thought
thanks for jogging my memory!

I still use a bean bag for resting the camera on
Good for resting on walls and rocks. Extreemly portable, and better than nothing when going up mountains or across bogs.

Tripods are best, but can be a bit of burden to carry all day.
