I made an identical program to fool one of these "Let us place an advert in your browser and we'll pay you" companies.I clocked up over a grand in a month, but they didn't pay a penny =(

Yeah', on both sides.It was fraud, but they didn't know that.
There were a load of these companies set up in the late 90s that took the money and ran.
