it's an interesting point

I'm certain she won't say no, given that our enormous joint mortgage is more of a commitment, but timing is worth considering.

I was thinking I'd do it near the beginning, then I could reap the benefits for the rest of the holiday.

turns out that this is not the way girls look at things. Do it early in the holiday, almost everyone I know taht has got engaged has argued with their girlfriend before hand as they as uptight and twitchy so just do it and reap the rewards!
