This is a question Off Topic

Are you a QOTWer? Do you want to start a thread that isn't a direct answer to the current QOTW? Then this place, gentle poster, is your friend.

Oh, come off it.
I'm sure that any search through the threads on here would find people using quotes and popular culture references as part of their communication. If it's the fact that it's a thread that is nothing more than a list then that's fair enough, but it's hardly emo. Some stuff is to people's taste, some isn't, but it's all just daft stuff typed into cyberspace. Personally I couldn't quote a single Bill Hicks line. I was just using an example.

But there's a difference between using quotations or popular culture as references
and starting a whole thread with a bunch of lyrics in an "OMG these lyrics speak volumes to me because they're so clever" kind of way.

It's fair game to take the piss out of things on here that don't quite fit the regular posting style, be it people who post links to start threads (especially when there's a much more tolerant /links board over there) or posting the content of 'hilarious' emails that we've all seen a million times.

Either you're being particularly thin-skinned about all this or you haven't hung around enough to get to know the rhythms of the place before posting and subsequently insisting we're all cliquey and mean/stupid.

Try posting the same stuff on /talk and see what happens.

The internet has been thoroughly entertaining today
and you've just hit the nail right on the head here. I think an obligatory Man The Fuck Up is in order.

Aye, that's a fair reponse and the first sentence encapuslates the issues perfectly.
The fact that thread was ill judged and people think it's shit doesn't concern me in the slightest. It's the fact that people assume that is done in the "precious" way that you describe that I find odd. I'm not bearing my soul here, it's just a daft list thread on a message board. The responses were more intense than anything I posted.

The responses were par for the course on this board
and I've seen much worse. Your response was to get defensive and point out other people's perceived deficiencies instead of rolling with the punches and maybe taking the piss back a bit, which would have instantly gained you some respect. People wouldn't have taken the piss any less, but I hope you know what I mean.

You're welcome, anyway, and I meant what I said earlier - it's nice that you're trying.
