I thought they didn't have to pay if it was a natural disasterI thought they only had to put you up if the delay was caused by them

That is the insuranceBut the airline must make sure you have a place to stay and food until they can take you back home. It's a European law (you see, we are not all bad) so if you're in Europe or somewhere else but are coming back with a European airline they have to pay for all that.
