UK airspace hasn't even been open 24 hours and already the previously clear skies over London are criss-crossed with contrail cirrus.
But on the plus side, my sister has managed to get back from the Czech Republic, and perhaps more urgently, my drummer has made it back from Holland, so our recording session may proceed as planned this weekend. WOO.
Have your loved ones come back to you from the far reaches of the globe? Or are you looking out the window resenting the iron birds that are dirtying our skies oncve more?

I'm too busy straining every sinew to control my overwhelming desire to correct Vipros' Joe Jackson quote above, and therefore make myself look like an even greater lyric-obsessed loser than I actually am.
But you're right about Leader of the Pack, the best of the "death songs" of that era, closely followed by Terry by Twinkle.

With all paid (at least if it was in Europe or with an European airline), which doesn't seem too bad to me
(, Wed 21 Apr 2010, 16:15, Reply)
if, say, I'd followed my sister to Prague, would have been a longer holiday - panic about money and accomodation notwithstanding - followed by a brief tour of Germany, Belgium and France as I tried to get back another way.
Though conversely, my sister's solution - a 25-hour coach journey from Prague to Manchester - sounds like the least pleasant way to get around it.

By law.
You'd only be putting more time out of work, which might mean losing some money, but then you get paid hotels and food en Europe.
(, Wed 21 Apr 2010, 16:21, Reply)
I thought they only had to put you up if the delay was caused by them
(, Wed 21 Apr 2010, 16:27, Reply)
But the airline must make sure you have a place to stay and food until they can take you back home. It's a European law (you see, we are not all bad) so if you're in Europe or somewhere else but are coming back with a European airline they have to pay for all that.

As someone who despises tv and has no holiday plans, I find it hard to care about either subjects.

I missed my flight to Brussels. Because I booked everything through lastminute, I couldn't change flights/hotels myself (I tried and was told they'd be happy to change the booking but had to be through lastminute). Because lastminute didn't answer the phone after hours waiting and just contacted me yesterday, the airline was unable to change my tickets for the same price and the hotel charges me for not telling them I wanted to cancel.
Lastminute is unable to defend me in front of the hotel or airline and doesn't accept any responsability.
Don't go near them. Avoid at all cost.

This is the one thing that's annoyed me throughout this, actually - the agents and travel insurance companies are avoiding payouts left, right and centre. Apparently you're not covered for this sort of thing if it's an "Act of God."
A volcano is not an Act of God. It's a Fucking Act of Geology.
I realise that if the travel insurance companies actually paid out what they'd originally signed for, it would bankrupt them. But isn't that the point of insurance? You basically gamble, and bet them so much money that something will go wrong on your holiday. They agreed to gamble, they lost. Now they appear to be hedging their bets.
(, Wed 21 Apr 2010, 16:09, Reply)
I'm not going to be missing much money, £30 at max, but I don't accept paying for something that is not my fault.
I called the hotel myself more than 24h before the 1st night, and they were happy to cancel or change, but couldn't do it without lasminute. So there you are, I have to pay for their mistakes.
Worst of all is the stupid girl on the phone (Shely, really?) telling me it's not their fault because, "well, because, you know, it's not. The hotel could be more flexible too, couldn't it?"
(, Wed 21 Apr 2010, 16:13, Reply)
if the petty constraints of their deal with lastminute allowed them to be so. For crying out loud...
(, Wed 21 Apr 2010, 16:16, Reply)
Don't use them. I finally got tickets to go in May, but had to pay extra as the cheap tickets were gone already. And I'll have to pay extra for the hotel too.
I'm so frustrated and upset I don't even feel bored at work today.
(, Wed 21 Apr 2010, 16:20, Reply)
via a deal with lastminute, and that caused no problems (apart from some minor confusion with the hotel thinking I was supposed to be two people rather than one). But then nothing went wrong during the course of that trip, and there, I suppose, is the big difference.
