I bought an electric kit
Learned on it, then bought my actual kit and sold the electric one at quite a big loss. But I have far more space now.

edit: Note how I seem to be looking for a positive in this.

I had my set for over a year
Alesis DM5Pro. I used it less and less, as it sat there mocking me and my ineptitude. I bought a book and DVD to learn from, a mate gave me a few lessons, but whilst I could do the rudiments no problem, I struggled with 3 limb independence, and flailed about at 4.

I think my main problem was trying to play along to songs I love (NIN, QOTSA etc) where the drums were just too difficult for me.
