Have you thought about having it made?Go try on a bunch of dresses to get the style you like (it's fun, go with a couple of friends and an older female relative who'll give sound, calm advice), then talk to a dressmaker. Way cheaper than buying a "proper" wedding dress. And you can ask them about dyeing it afterwards so you can wear it again for other occasions.

I had thought of something like that, yesI might start asking about references, as I don't know anyone here apart from Mark's family, but they're very posh, and I don't want to trust my dress to someone I don't know at all.
