you want to eat them before they get that old anyway

what a very
modest proposal
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 15:56, Reply)
how so?

(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 15:58, Reply)
sorry
a Jonathan Swift joke there
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 15:59, Reply)
outside my experience I am afraid

(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:02, Reply)
he wrote a pamphlet
called 'A modest proposal' in which he volunteered the idea that since the British lacked meat, and the Irish were poor and had too many children, that they should sell their children as meat to rich people
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:04, Reply)
a sensible proposal
why did that not catch on?

I bet it was because the rich don't want to eat the mick
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:05, Reply)
well he did point out the objection
about depopulation of Ireland resulting. A lot of people did not realise it was satire.

'A young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee, or a ragout.'

Quite shocking for the time
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:08, Reply)
I can imagine it was shocking
I'm still on board with his ideas though
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:10, Reply)
except it would be
African children these days. No wonder there are no photos of Madonna's new adoptee. She's obviously gone the ragout route
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:11, Reply)
it wouldn't surprise me
she has the look of a cannibal. in fact I strongly suspect she is a wendigo
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:19, Reply)
my only knowledge of wendigos
is off Supernatural. In which case yes, yes she is
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:19, Reply)
my further source of knowledge is this film
www.imdb.com/title/tt0129332/
(well worth watching)

but it is much the same as in supernatural, albeit without the shapeshifting
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:21, Reply)
oh I forgot
you watch Supernatural. Join the club
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:25, Reply)
I've seen about half the first series
and that was all in one day when I was ill. must try harder.
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:27, Reply)
you definitely must
it's well worth the watch. It's one of those rare shows that gets better and better, rather than degenerating. So the first season if not bad, is a bit banal, while as it goes on it gets darker and more thoughtful
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:29, Reply)
sounds good
need to get the mrs interested, then she will motivate me to watch it.
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:30, Reply)
do you own it
or did you rent/borrow it?
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:31, Reply)
I err...."borrowed" it
we are running out of stuff on the lovefilm list though, so can add some of it to that or something.
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:33, Reply)
haha
I was just going to say. I have all of it on disc, so you'd be welcome to borrow it if you don't mind waiting (or borrow a later season)
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:38, Reply)
thanks for the offer
but I've got a couple of avenues which will make it less likely that you will murder me for not giving you back your DVDs within a sensible timeframe ;-)
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 16:39, Reply)
I've watched it quite a lot
I think I could survive one season going missing for a few months. But yeah whatever is best :)
