but at uni he used Rotring Rapidograph or Isograph which were alright. Although he said he used to get in a mess whatever

Thanks, I'll have a look at those. I've got quite high marks on my drafting so far so I can't be that bad at it. Plus professional firms all use CAD for the most part anyway.

3D stuff is harder, but the books out there are pretty good. it's an easy thing to learn from a book.
