18 years service means about £55k payoff after tax if it happens under current terms. Which I wouldn't complain about, frankly.
If the government push through their planned changes to civil service redundancies that'll drop to about £27k, so I'm of a mind that if I get an offer now I'll take it, even though I like my job, because in three years time when the programme I work on ends I'll probably be shafted.

Live of the other part until you find another job. If you get one quickly, then splure the remainder of your accessible half on whatever you want. Just keep the first half for pension.
No more wise words, drink yourself blind for three months instead.
