My bf never knows when to use each of them
It makes it very funny, as for us a sentence means something completely different depending on which past you use. He doesn't like me laughing at him.

It's not a bad trick. The problem with the past is that you have 2 past tenses and we have 6, that's without counting the continuous tenses. He can't understand why we need 4 more than you.
We have as well 4 futures instead of 1 like you, but I think they're easier to understand.
