Vippers’ Squirrel Venture II – a review, by that there Monty off of the World Wide Web
Last time I reviewed the first part of this marvellous prog-out, I wrote it like a proper review, so this time I am posting my notes in chronological order as looking at them they seem quite funny. To me.
1. Hawkwind noises!
2. Deep Purple (drums beefed up compared with part 1, vg)
3. Nice 12-string style breakdown
4. 70s heavy riffage [BEST BIT SO FAR!]
5. Nice restrained, tasteful solo
6. BACKWARDS GUITAR (three ticks)
7. Psych-out, Page-ish acoustic trip with Hawks-ish ambience
8. Nice buildup into Supernautish bit
9. Comedy harmonics!
10. Mellow psych
11. Dance beat, quite hypnotic, Banshees-esque for some reason. Good stuff – doesn’t sound like ‘guitar band goes dance’
12. Ooh – doomy!
13. Bit ‘grunge’, my least fave so far – I’d have gone Morricone here which it nearly does
14. TRACTOR!
15. Metal meltdown: skills
16. Gay piano jazz

It's a triumph - production-wise leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor and even stronger in the tunes department. If the guitarist could only stop being such a horrific bottom-wrangler these chaps have WHAT IT TAKES.

EDIT I'm not expecting any replies to this (apart from 'why?'), don't worry.

thoroughly entertaining review there old chap
much obliged

must admit though, I'm not sure which bits you are referring to in places.

just occurred to me that the tasteful guitar solo wasn't me, it was my colleague
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:34, Reply)
Every time it changed (I think) I made a note.
I am a little 'refreshed', though, so perhaps there is a recurring 'gibberish' theme...
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:39, Reply)
fair enough
which is the Tractor bit? The acoustic bit with oohs and aahs?

the solo during the metal bit at the end is probably the best one I've ever committed to tape which is quite pleasing
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:40, Reply)
a) yes, a touch of 'Every Time it Happens' (highest available praise)
b) I read that as 'I've committed a rape'
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:42, Reply)
nice
I must have been subliminally inspired by them. Only bit I didn't do on that section was the chicken-shaker thing.

what did you think of the end?
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:43, Reply)
A bit 'Duke of Kent'.

(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:43, Reply)
that's fair
I find it fairly hilarious
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:46, Reply)
I did smirk.
But at the end of an odyssey such as that, is 'smirking' really the way you want to leave your listener? Were it my opus I think I'd return to the slolw, heavy riff from item 4 to tie it all together...
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:48, Reply)
you raise an interesting point
my thoughts were that we wanted to remind the listener that despite what they have just heard, tongues should remain planted firmly in cheeks.

If part 4 is the bit I think it is, I have to admit I had nothing to do with that bit. I was blown away when I first heard it. My mate had been listening to a lot of Wolfmother and the like at the time.

I'll go and refresh myself and have a think about it. It's about time we got on with some more music.
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:53, Reply)
To become super-heavy you have to go super-slow, I reckon.
Black Sabbath proved this time and time again...
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:55, Reply)
I think you are right
certainly my best heavy stuff is slow.

I'd really like a 5 string bass to work with.

I have some fabulous Moroccan hashish at the moment.
Nearly on par with what I smoked 'in situ'. Blond, but dark and very oily. Like my women*

*that I've just made up

I like my coffee as I like my women
ground up and kept in the freezer.

Tescos Californian Zinfandel is much nicer than Tescos Reserve Californian Zinfandel
What's up with that?
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:39, Reply)
Cillit Bang is better than any Zinfandel I've ever drunk.
What's THAT all about?

*Seinfeld face*
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:41, Reply)
You just haven't drunk the right zinfandel
I drank a Gallo one and complained about it to an epicurean friend and promptly got a bottle of Clos du Bois which was fucking godlike.
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:48, Reply)
An ex of mine was related to the Gallos.
That's precisely where I'd send them to, were I 'Wine Steppenfuhrer'. 'Turning Leaf'? Turning fucking Japanese I say.
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:51, Reply)
I went to their winery a few years ago and got utterly shitfaced on Grenache and Zinfandel. I think they liked me.

(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 21:57, Reply)
I have heard Gallo referred to as Grape Assassins subsequently
I steer clear these days.
(, Wed 21 Jul 2010, 22:02, Reply)
Serial grapists, they are.
Foul.
