but with Ed it was clearly self-aggrandisement and a need to impress that drove him to lie. Why the fuck would someone set up a bullshit account simply to claim they were an American visiting Britain, having a curry and a few pissups and generally seeing the sights?

That would be a very, very odd and possibly terrifying nutter simply because of the wholly inexplicble nature of their ruse.
