I know several peopleone of whom was a talented mathematician, go completely nuts and never come back. An old school pal told me he was 'experimenting on his own brain' - he didn't last long either.

You never knowwhether they would have 'gone' at some point anyway. The three worst basket-cases I've known were all a bit odd to begin with.
I was moved up one academic year myself - maybe I'm about to FLIP OUT.
