I don't know if its still done,But apparently, back when my Dad was in the navy, if they weren't that keen on you, they'd go back to the ship and pin it on the noticeboard. Along with whatever else you gave them: addresses, photos etc.
So the sailor you arranged a date with wasn't necessarily the on ethat turned up on your doorstep.
