Shogun and King Rat are brilliant though

Shogun is based on a true story.
Told very well in this book, too:

depends what you like more
Shogun is set in 16th century Japan. Long, involved, very good.
King Rat is based on the author and his time in Changi in the Second World War. It's a lot more painfully raw than the others
