Do you know a fascinating fact that will amuse, intrigue or otherwise engage my feeble mind?

Shogun is set in 16th century Japan. Long, involved, very good.
King Rat is based on the author and his time in Changi in the Second World War. It's a lot more painfully raw than the others

The internet was first invented not by the US military as everyone thinks but by Knights travelling through Europe on their way to the crusades
They would set up a series of peasants who would stand close to each other, all the way from their start location to their end location. These peasants would take little scrolls and pass them along to the knight waiting for his news at the end.
It was so successful that the idea of sending just scrolls got boring, so they started playing Chess, sending moves down the chain. Eventually primitive message boards were set up, with copies at each end of the chain and information being copied out by diligent peasant scribes. These acted as informal discussion areas, where passers-by could stop, leave a comment on the board and it would be whisked away by the peasants to be copied to all the other 'Bords of Messyge' in the area
