... it's the menu and play buttons that aren't working, so the re-set isn't working... but thanks for trying...

no.....
it's not actually frozen, everything is working except the play/menu buttons. thanks again though.

what else can i do, as i don't think sobbing with impotent rage is going to do it!

Easy.
Leave it on until the battery dies. It'll turn itself off then.

Thus allowing you to turn it back on again - meaning you'd have completed the classic 'switch it off and switch it back on again' solution that fixes as many technology problems as Domestos kills germs.
