It was a Simpsons quote
and it was as untrue in this context as it was when Bart said it

I've been saying that since before the Simpsons were around
just because something is in the Simpsons doesn't mean it is a Simpsons quote.
particularly if Monty says it

That's exactly what it means
I also bet you haven't been saying that since you were 6

I was definitely saying it before then

Ah, but, for what reason, or under whose influence, did you start saying it?
Just because you hadn't seen it on the Simpsons in, for example, '91 doesn't mean that the friend you heard it from hadn't seen it on Sky
The episode I'm thinking of was broadcast in season 12, if I remember rightly, so this is a totally moot point

There is an underlying point about how The Simpsons has sublimated itself into the fabric of pop culture to such an extent that lines from it are used by people who claim not to watch it, or even to dislike it
but that's much better illustrated by watching an episode of Family Guy with someone who prefers the Griffins to the Simpsons, and pointing out the number of gags lifted wholesale - sometimes verbatim - from the latter

I tend to avoid such analysis
because I don't care.

I don't watch either Family Guy
or the Simpsons. The few episodes I've seen seem to recycle very old jokes a lot

In the case of the Simpsons
if you've seen episodes from the first few series, the jokes are old because the programme is old. In the later series I will admit the wheels came off and they started covering old ground, as far as I can tell their logic was "Family Guy can re-use our jokes so we might as well do so too"
