oh god no
if you go as a singleton you either look at all the couples and want to kill yourself or wish desperately that you were back at home or in a club somewhere to celebrate your lovely lovely freedom. either way you end up very very drunk and it's only really fun once everyone is on the dancefloor.

if you go in a couple it inevitably makes you examine your own relationship. you end up very very drunk and it's only really fun once everyone is on the dancefloor.

Nope
Being around happy couples has always made me very happy.
Being a serial dater I was often a single gal at functions and I quite enjoyed my special status.
Being around squabbling couples only made me grateful I was single.
One girl ruined a cheese and wine party by bursting through the door in tears going "OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE, MY SISTER'S GOT ENGAGED!" and then shot her boyfriend the biggest evils all night.

Well, the latter is just fucking rude
You don't impose yourself on an evening by just spilling your problems over everyone during your entrance to the room. It's just not British.

Well she'd been out for a smoke, so it was a re-entry
but it's still rude.
And how evil to react like that to your sister's news. I asked if they got on (I thought there might be a history of resentment) but she said no. She said she adored her sister but she was simply fuming and desperate because her sister had not been going out with her bloke as long as she'd been going out with hers, and it made her resentful. "I cannot sit there watching her make all her plans and be all jolly about it." is what she said.

Jesus. Quel bitch.
Well, that's just phenomenally selfish.
