ffs, the amount I've spent on vet bills alone so far covers my passport and a quarter of the flight and hotel price to london(

Granted, we have no national health service for pets hereBut the insurance isn't that expensive and the excess you pay is usually no more than fifty-quid, making poorly-pets affordable! (It also means people rescuing older animals who might have health problems are still motivated to do so).
