The principle is similarThe only reason it's not as versatile, or varied, or inspiring of true talent is that there is such a "wealth" of mass media available to the jaded masses now.
In the real days of Vaudeville (which I guess were probably 1850-1914 ish) it served roughly the same purpose and demographic as X Factor et al do now.
